Using non-destructive excavation methods is best practice

Safe excavation with Excavac

Using non-destructive excavation methods is the preferred method and regarded as best practice by owners and regulators to prove the existence and location of an asset.

Additionally, some owners have made it mandatory to expose assets before beginning any works.

Before beginning any excavation, it is recommended certified locators be engaged who have the requisite skills and appropriate locating equipment to locate underground infrastructures.

Some locators will have specific training to meet the requirements of a varied set of asset owners; while some asset owners may specify their own certified locators, who have had specific training and have access to specialised equipment to work on their infrastructure.

Non-destructive hydro excavation or vacuum excavation techniques are widely accepted as the safest method to expose or excavate underground assets for repair, remediation and clean-up work.

The technology serves several different purposes, encompassing civil construction work, rail infrastructure excavation, potholing/posthole digging, trenching, upgrading or removing underground conduits.

It is generally accepted as best practice for in site investigation, general construction and remediation works and on sensitive, safety aware industrial facilities such as refineries, chemical manufacturing and power sites.

The process usually involves using a hydrovac truck that offers a precise method of reducing the potential to damage and impact infrastructure, utilities, or cause injury.

Using this non-destructive technology can quickly, safely and economically provide a less invasive solution to all onsite soft excavation, clean-up and digging jobs, while minimising the impact to the environment, reducing disruption to surface activities and increasing the progress rate of an excavation program.

The benefits include providing asset protection through non-destructive locating of underground utilities/services and allowing identification without making physical contact with them.

Excavation can occur in areas otherwise inaccessible by traditional machinery. It also has minimal impact on surface activities and traffic flows.

For smaller jobs it is a faster, more efficient and cost-effective method than manual/hand excavation.
